Happy New Year

Quite the celebratory weekend ahead, starting today (Friday) with Asia’s Lunar New Year, followed by Valentine’s Day on Sunday & Family Day on Monday. While there will be no big gatherings and distancing with masks still the rule, this should be a weekend of some recovery for our local restaurants – even given the now limited capacity – but all with their safety protocols in place.

Today’s holiday is about luck, health and family reunions – many of those this auspicious New Year will take place on Zoom. The Metal Ox year begins today, lasting until January 31st 2022 & the Ox year occurs every 12 years. Those born in a year of the ox are inspirational – strong, reliable, fair & conscientious. Others trust them as they are calm, patient and methodical, but not perfect, as they have a stubborn streak & hate to fail! The other people looking forward to a stable fortune throughout the coming year are those born in the year of the Rat on the Chinese zodiac. Their persistent spirit, patience and loyalty will be rewarded with many golden career opportunities.

A delightful story about this year’s New Year celebrations is taking place in the Sapperton neighbourhood of New Westminster where about 70 homes are decked out with red lanterns & decorations thanks to a request from a new neighbour. A mother sent out 150 letters to local residents requesting them to consider decorating for Lunar New Year so that her young son would not feel lonely in a primarily non Asian location. Wonderful results from caring neighbours – who says one person can’t make a difference?
Then our weekend becomes about romantic love and love of family.
Enjoy the celebrations whatever forms they take.
