David and Goliath Compete for Business!

Just how important small businesses are in the life of a community and city was never so evident as at last Tuesday’s Port Moody public hearing. Even during this pandemic, local citizens packed the Covid limited capacity at City Hall and  the Galleria to support Rylie Abelman’s bid to open the Happy Hippie cannabis dispensary on Clarke Street. A flood of supportive emails arrived at City Hall from citizens unable to attend in person.

Rylie is the well loved and respected owner of Saint James Well neighbourhood pub – a man who supports other small community businesses,  fundraisers and local charities. His competition? – a Vancouver businessman vying to open a ‘Canoe’ cannabis retail shop – ‘Canoe’ is multi layered & multi lingual with stores in other countries and backing from corporate giants like Roots. Impressive, but Tuesday was all about the fabric of community, the known quantity and keeping it local. No contest – Rylie and his proposal won the day.

As we work our way through pandemic days, weeks, months & maybe even years, we are doing it together with our neighbours, our store owners, local businesses and  councillors.  This is our time to pull together.
Tuesday was a satisfying victory for the “little guy” and the citizens who care.  What better 40th birthday gift could Rylie Abelman have received than that huge, well deserved heartfelt vote of confidence!

Well done Port Moody!
